First Father’s Day Tied to the Workplace

Via the CDC and NISOH Science Blog:
Did you know that the first Father’s Day has workplace origins?  On July
5, 1908, a West Virginia church sponsored the nation’s first event to
explicitly honor fathers[i].  The Sunday sermon was held in memory of
the 362 men who were killed in explosions at the Fairmont Coal Company
mines in Monongah, West Virginia the previous December.  These
explosions remain the worst mine disaster[ii] and the worst industrial
catastrophe of any kind[iii] in the history of the United States.  The
362 casualties left more than 1,000 widows and children.

Treating Chemical Burns

Important info on treating chemical burns:

When dealing
with any kind of burn always treat it as a serious burn. For chemical
burns check the instructions on the container or MSDS, usually you will
need to flush the skin immediately for
15 minutes. Then see your doctor and provide them with the MSDS of the
chemical that caused the burn.

One sunny June morning in 2009, Hector* went to work just as he had
every other morning. He climbed to the roof as usual to begin working.
But this day was different. In an instant, Hector was hanging over the
outside edge of the second story wall of the home the residential
construction company he worked for was building.

More on the Campaign to stop falls in the construction industry is here.

Keys to Lowering Back Stress

Back pain is the second most

National Emphasis Program—Nursing and Residential Care Facilities

A three-year enforcement effort focused on ergonomic issues at nursing homes and residential care facilities was announced April 5 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
In addition to looking for problems involving ergonomics, such as lifting patients, and bloodborne pathogens, OSHA compliance officers will check for strategies designed to prevent workplace violence, tuberculosis, and falls, according to the program directive.
The scope of an inspection can be expanded if other hazards, such as exposure to multi-drug resistant organisms and dangerous chemicals, are found.
The national emphasis program, CPL 03-00-016, became effective with the announcement.
It covers establishments in three North American Industry Classification System categories:
• nursing care facilities (623110),
• residential mental retardation facilities (623210), and

• continuing care retirement communities (623311).
